Dauphin Island's museum at Historic Fort Gaines is a self-guided walking tour through a well-preserved 19th century brick fort on the east end of Dauphin Island, Alabama. It is just across from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Estuarium. It has a wonderful view of the bay from the fort, and is one of our favorite things to do on Dauphin Island!
Fort Gaines was named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. The fort is located on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, at the western approach to Mobile Bay.
